How fraud analysts can prepare for the AI operator exam

A three-week study plan for fraud analysts preparing for the AI operator exam: which modules matter most, how to use module tests, and how to pace the day.

Fraud analysts can usually prepare for the AI operator exam in three focused weeks: Foundations in the first few evenings, the eight Operator modules over the next fortnight, and a timed rehearsal at the end. The exam is 40 questions in 60 minutes. You need four in five correct, 32 questions, to pass.

Why can a fraud analyst move faster than most?

You already think in signals, sources and thresholds. You know that a device fingerprint is harder evidence than a customer's explanation, and that some actions, once taken, cannot be undone. Those instincts map directly onto provenance classes, depth, and the difference between held and withheld.

The risk is overconfidence. Fraud work teaches you to act on probability; the exam asks about rules. An agent with an excellent fraud model still cannot release a payment above its depth, because depth is earned through certification, not inferred from accuracy. The list of what is on the AI operator exam shows where the rules sit.

A three-week plan

Budget about 6 hours a week. Foundations is about 4 hours and the Operator track about 14.

  1. You, days 1 to 4: Foundations. Six modules. Focus on the decision chain and depth and certification; skim nothing.
  2. You, week 1 weekend: Operator modules on how a governed agent decides and human review. Take both module tests.
  3. You, week 2: teaching the agent, reading the workspace, keeping knowledge current, when something goes wrong. Do the labs in a free Build workspace, and watch how a run that clears no depth drops an agent to depth 1 the same day.
  4. You, week 3, first half: usage and billing, running the rhythm. Retake any module test where you dropped more than one question in five.
  5. You, week 3, second half: timed rehearsal. Set 40 questions from your notes and answer them in 60 minutes, twice.
  6. You: sit the exam on a day off, not after a night shift.

If you want a printable version, the operator exam study plan template lays these steps out as a tracker.

How does a payments workflow map to depth?

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Scoring a transaction Reads sealed data and recommends 1 Deciding the response
Drafting a customer warning Writes and holds 2 Approving the wording
Placing a temporary block Executes within bounds 3 Reviewing and lifting blocks
Stopping or releasing a payment Prepares, held 4, held A named analyst acts
Reversing a settled payment on the platform's rail Withheld withheld Recovery by other routes

The bottom two rows are where fraud analysts lose marks. A held payment stop is a customer-level decision: the customer's own limits or role scope put it in front of a person. A settled reversal is withheld at the platform floor for every agent at every depth. No customer setting can change that.

How should you use the module tests?

Module tests are set in your own industry and role, so you will see payment alerts, scam claims and blocks. Take each one cold, straight after the module. Then read every explanation, including the ones you got right; fraud analysts often reach the right answer for a reason the exam does not accept, such as "the risk score was high", when the deciding reason is the bound that applied.

Keep a list headed "the bound that decided". For each question you miss, write the bound: role scope, certificate, sources, the customer's own limits, or the platform guardrails. Within a week the pattern of your errors is obvious.

Which controls should you be able to explain?

  • Held verdicts on money movement: evidence is the named approver.
  • Provenance: a forwarded "bank message" is external and cannot authorise a payment; evidence is the source tag.
  • Certificate lapse after 90 days: an agent whose certificate has lapsed loses the depth it earned; evidence is the certificate status.
  • Append-only record: every verdict, including refusals, is filed, so a disputed stop can be reconstructed.

What does the exam day call for?

Ninety seconds a question. Fraud analysts are used to fast triage, which helps, but slow down on any question with the words "may", "must" or "always". Those are rule questions, and the trap answers are usually right in practice but wrong under the rules.

If you prepare partly on a phone, rehearse at least once on the device you will use for the exam so the layout is not a surprise; preparing for the operator certificate on a phone covers what works on a small screen.

What should you measure?

Module test scores on first and second attempt. Your timed rehearsal score and finishing time. The length of your "bound that decided" list: if it stops growing, you are ready.

Where does preparation usually go wrong?

Treating the exam as a fraud quiz. It is a governance exam that uses fraud examples. Questions about usage and billing or running the rhythm feel distant from your work, but they count the same.

Skipping the practicum preparation. You will spend two weeks deciding held payments to a standard of nineteen in twenty with no missed red line. KYC analysts and business analysts follow neighbouring plans in how KYC analysts prepare for the exam and how business analysts prepare.

Questions people ask

Do I need to understand fraud models to pass?

No. The exam does not ask how models score risk. It asks what an agent may do with a score, who decides, and what is recorded.

Is three weeks too fast?

For most fraud analysts it is enough, because the reasoning is familiar. If your module test scores stay below four in five after a retake, add a week rather than sitting early.

Will employers in fraud ask for this certificate?

Some may value it, none should be assumed to require it. It shows an employer you understand governed agents and have made review decisions to a standard, and they can check it at source.
