How KYC analysts can prepare for the AI operator exam

A four-week study plan for KYC analysts preparing for the AI operator exam, built on provenance, held decisions and onboarding cases in module tests.

Plan four weeks. A KYC analyst preparing for the AI operator exam should finish Foundations in week one, cover the eight Operator modules and their module tests in weeks two and three, and spend week four on weak spots and timed practice. The exam is 40 questions in 60 minutes; 32 correct passes.

Where does KYC experience help, and where does it mislead?

Evidence grading is the core of KYC, and it is also the core of provenance. You already know that a document checked with its issuer is stronger than a form the customer filled in. The exam calls these signed and declared, and adds sealed (from the system of record itself) and external (arrived from outside, such as an emailed scan).

Where KYC can mislead you is risk appetite. Your bank may accept a document type the exam treats as weak, because your procedure adds other checks. Answer the exam's question, not your bank's procedure. The outline of what is on the AI operator exam shows the full ground.

The four-week plan

Expect about 4 hours for Foundations and 14 for the Operator modules, so roughly 4 to 5 hours a week.

  1. You, week 1: Foundations, six modules. Read the decision chain module twice. It explains why an action must clear five bounds at once.
  2. You, week 2: how a governed agent decides, human review, teaching the agent, reading the workspace. Take each module test straight after the module.
  3. You, week 3: keeping knowledge current, when something goes wrong, usage and billing, running the rhythm. Do the labs in the free Build workspace; watch an onboarding draft go from held to approved.
  4. You, week 4, days 1 to 3: retake weak module tests and rewrite your notes for those modules.
  5. You, week 4, days 4 to 6: two timed rehearsals of 40 questions in 60 minutes.
  6. You: sit the exam when both rehearsals clear 32 comfortably.

The operator exam study plan template turns this into a tracker with columns for scores and retakes.

How does onboarding map to depth?

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Running screening Reads results and presents hits 1 Discounting or escalating
Drafting a risk rating Drafts with factors, holds 2 Agreeing the rating
Requesting documents Sends approved templates 3 Non-standard requests
Opening the account Prepares, held 3, held The analyst's approval
Accepting an emailed scan as verified Refused: external, unverified refused Verification by a person

Expect the exam to ask why each row sits where it does. The answer is always the lowest of the five bounds: role scope, the agent's certificate, its sources, the bank's own limits, and the platform guardrails. The verdict names which one decided.

How should you use the module tests?

Module tests are set in your own industry and role, so a KYC analyst in retail banking sees onboarding, screening and periodic review cases. Treat your first attempt as a measure, not a performance. Write every miss into a two-column note: what you chose, and what decided the right answer.

KYC analysts tend to lose marks in two places. One is depth: confusing "the agent sends a document request" (depth 3, routine, within bounds) with "the agent decides the customer is acceptable" (held for a person). The other is the "keeping knowledge current" module, which asks what happens when a policy or procedure changes and the agent's sources have not caught up.

Which controls should you be able to explain?

  • Held decisions: no account opens on a draft alone; the evidence is the approver's name.
  • Provenance tags: the evidence is the class beside each document and data point.
  • Certificate status: an agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 that day, so its document requests stop going out unreviewed.
  • The append-only record: every verdict is filed, which lets a supervisor reconstruct an onboarding decision long after the event.

What should you expect on the day?

Ninety seconds per question. Read the scenario, decide which bound applies, then read the options. Questions with a sanctions or PEP flavour are not trick questions about screening; they are about who decides and on what evidence.

The habit that matters most if you want to pass the AI operator exam first time is finishing timed rehearsals with time to spare before you book.

What should you measure?

First and second attempt scores on each module test. The number of misses that come from depth versus provenance versus reading. Your rehearsal scores and finishing times. If depth errors persist, redo the depth table above from memory until it is exact.

Track one more thing: questions where your bank's procedure and the exam's answer differ. Write each one down with a note on why. Those notes stop you answering from muscle memory on the day, and they make useful material later, when an interviewer asks how your KYC experience fits a governed workspace.

Where does preparation usually go wrong?

Studying only the modules that feel like KYC. Usage and billing, and running the rhythm, carry marks too.

Leaving the practicum until after the exam without planning it. It is two weeks of decisions to a standard of nineteen in twenty with no missed red line. Compliance and fraud analysts follow related plans in how compliance analysts prepare for the exam and how fraud analysts prepare.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy provides the lessons, labs and module tests free, and sets the module tests in your own industry and role. The written exam and the practicum together earn Certified Pryme Operator, valid 12 months and checkable at source through VerifyDoc.ai. The AI operator certification guide explains what the certificate proves.

Questions people ask

Does the exam test AML law?

No. It tests how governed agents work and how people oversee them. Your AML knowledge helps you picture the scenarios, but legal detail is not examined.

How much revision is enough after a good first module test score?

Retake only where you missed more than one in five. Spend the saved time on timed rehearsals instead.

Is the certificate a regulatory qualification?

No. It is a professional certificate, not a government licence or a regulator's approval. Employers can check it, and it shows real review decisions.
