To become an AI agent builder in Australia, combine deep knowledge of one business process with the skill to write an agent's brief, choose its sources, set its bounds and get it certified on real cases. Most builders come from operations, quality or analysis rather than engineering. Prove it with review experience and a certified capstone agent.
What does agent building look like in Australia today?
Australian demand sits where processes are high-volume and regulated: banks, insurers, superannuation funds, utilities, telcos and government service providers. Many organisations start with an agent that reads and drafts, then extend it once the evidence supports more. The builder is the person who turns "we want an agent for claims intake" into a brief, a set of trusted sources and a test set the agent must pass.
The job is rarely labelled "AI agent builder". Adverts say automation specialist, AI solutions analyst, conversational designer, process improvement lead or AI operations analyst. Read the duties: designing agent workflows, writing test cases, working with reviewers, documenting controls. Our explainer on what an AI agent builder does sets out the daily work in detail.
What do builders build, and at what depth?
A builder does not change a model's weights. You change the agent's brief, sources, bounds and certification, and you test each capability separately. Typical Australian projects:
- Claims intake at an insurer, depth 2. The agent reads the lodgement, checks the policy wording and drafts the claim file. A claims officer decides. You write test cases from past claims, including flood and storm claims with tricky wording.
- Hardship detection at a utility, depth 1 then 2. The agent flags hardship signals in contact notes and drafts a referral. Trained staff decide the arrangement.
- Member enquiries at a super fund, depth 2. The agent drafts replies on contributions and balances from the fund's records. It must refuse anything that would be personal financial advice, and you test that refusal hard.
- Invoice matching in shared services, depth 3. Where documents agree within tolerance, the certified agent posts; differences are held.
Each agent goes through Attest, which replays it against real cases and scores it on seven gates: grounded, refuses, depth, escalates, scope, adversarial and stable. Certificates lapse after 90 days, so recertification is part of your calendar.

What skills and certificate do Australian employers look for?
Employers look for people who know the process cold and can write precisely. You must be able to say which source an agent should trust, which it must ignore, and what it should do when sources disagree. You must design test cases that include the ugly ones: the claim with a missing document, the member who asks "should I switch funds?"
Certified Pryme Builder is the professional certificate for this work. It is not a government licence. It takes about 24 hours of study plus a capstone agent certified in Attest to depth 2 or higher, and is valid for 12 months. It follows the Operator track, so you will have proven review decisions first. The certificate is issued through VerifyDoc.ai, and an employer can check it at source by number or QR code. The AI agent builder CV template shows how to describe your capstone so an interviewer can question it.
Which Australian rules shape a builder's work?
The Privacy Act 1988, overseen by the OAIC, governs the personal information your agent reads and the test cases you build. Use de-identified or properly authorised data in test sets, and design agents to use only the information they need.
For APRA-regulated entities, CPS 230 requires operational risk management, including of critical operations and service providers. Agents that support critical operations need documented controls, tested limits and a plan for when they fail; a certification run that clears no depth, dropping an agent to depth 1, is one such plan, and you should document it. ASIC's conduct expectations shape what customer-facing agents may say, and the government's voluntary AI safety standard is a common reference for governance and human oversight.
This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
What does a 90-day plan look like?
Days 1 to 30. Earn the free Foundations badge and start Operator. Pick one process you know well and write it down as an agent brief: role, sources, what it may do, what it must refuse.
Days 31 to 60. Finish Operator, including the practicum, on a simulated queue if your employer does not use Pryme. Collect 50 past cases from your process (de-identified) and write the right answer for each.
Days 61 to 90. Work through Builder and certify your capstone agent in a free Build workspace. Write a one-page summary of what failed first and how you fixed it. Then apply. If you are already a reviewer, moving from AI agent reviewer to AI agent builder covers the internal route. For timing, a full Builder certificate in 90 days is ambitious alongside a job; it is fine to take longer.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy runs the Builder labs and capstone in a free Build workspace, so you can certify an agent without an employer's system. The tracks run in order: Foundations, Operator, then Builder. If you have never reviewed agent decisions, stop at Operator first. Our guides on how to become an AI agent builder and AI agent jobs and careers show the wider route.
Questions people ask
Do I need to code?
Not for most builder roles in a governed platform. You write briefs, choose sources and design tests. Basic data skills help when you assemble test sets.
Which sector is easiest to start in?
The one you already know. A claims officer builds better claims agents than a generalist, because they know the edge cases.
How long does Builder certification last?
Twelve months. Your agents' certificates lapse after 90 days, so you will recertify agents far more often than yourself.
