An AI agent builder designs, trains and certifies AI agents. They turn a job into an agent's brief, choose its sources and connections, set its bounds, train it on real cases and prove it works through certification. Day to day, that means talking to the people who do the job, testing hard cases and fixing what fails.
What does a builder's week involve?
Building a governed agent is less about code and more about defining work precisely. A typical week covers:
- Understanding the job. Sitting with claims handlers, KYC analysts or support staff to learn what they decide, what they check and where they escalate.
- Writing the brief. In Pryme, Agent Studio takes a plain-language description of the job and assembles the agent's brief: its role, sources and connections. The result is a candidate, not a deployed agent.
- Choosing sources. Deciding which systems the agent reads and how far each can be trusted. A core ledger is sealed; a verified issuer is signed; a customer's statement is declared; an email is external.
- Setting bounds. Deciding how far the agent may act: read, draft, execute routine work, move money.
- Testing on real cases. Running the agent against the business's own past cases, looking at failures and fixing the brief, sources or bounds.
- Certification. Attest replays the agent against real cases and scores every answer against a floor. Seven gates must each clear: grounded, refuses, depth, escalates, scope, adversarial and stable.
How does a builder change an agent?
Through qualification, not retraining the model. A governed agent's behaviour changes when its brief, sources, bounds or certification change. Builders do not update model weights for a customer. That keeps changes traceable: you can see what changed and replay the agent to prove the change worked.
Who does a builder work with?
- Reviewers, whose decisions and reasons show where the agent goes wrong.
- AI operations analysts, who read the record across many cases and point to patterns.
- The agent owner, who answers for the agent and approves its scope.
- Risk, compliance and security staff, who set limits and test for risks such as prompt injection.
- Engineers, for integrations with internal systems.
What does building look like on a real agent?
Take a builder we will call Nina at a mid-sized insurer, building an agent to handle motor glass claims. She sits with two claims handlers for a day and learns that most glass claims are simple, but a few involve windscreen sensors that raise the repair cost a lot. She writes the brief, connects the policy system and the approved repairer list, and bounds the agent to settle claims under a set amount at depth 3, holding the rest.
In testing, the agent fails the escalation gate: it settles a claim where the customer mentions the car was also damaged in the incident, which should have gone to a handler. Nina adds a rule and reruns the cases. The agent passes all seven gates and is certified to depth 3, with the insurer's own limits still applying. Its certificate lapses after 90 days, so she plans the next run.
What skills does the job need?
- Process analysis: breaking a job into decisions, checks and escalations.
- Writing: clear briefs and rules.
- Testing mindset: designing cases that expose weak spots.
- Data literacy: knowing where facts come from and how reliable they are.
- Domain knowledge of the work the agent will do.
Deep machine learning skills are not usually needed. Some technical comfort with systems and data helps.
How do people become builders?
Many come from operations, business analysis, QA testing or process improvement, sometimes after working as reviewers. How to become an AI agent builder sets out the route, and the definition of an agent builder covers the term. An AI agent builder CV template helps present your experience. Country routes are covered for Australia and Singapore. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers shows where builders fit among other roles.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Builder track is about 24 hours of learning plus a capstone: an agent you build and certify in Attest to depth 2 or higher. It leads to Certified Pryme Builder, valid for 12 months. Foundations and Operator come first, because builders need to understand how governed agents decide and how reviewers work with them.
Questions people ask
Is an agent builder a software developer?
Not usually. Builders define and prove the agent's job. Developers may build integrations, but the builder's core skill is precise definition and testing.
Can one builder look after many agents?
Yes, but each needs ongoing work: certification lapses, sources change, and reviewers find new failures. Builders often look after a family of related agents.
What is the hardest part of the job?
Getting the bounds right. Too tight and the agent holds everything; too loose and it acts where it should escalate.
