How to become an AI agent builder in the US

How to become an AI agent builder in the US: the work, where roles sit, SR 11-7, ECOA and privacy rules, the certificate employers check, a 90-day plan.

US employers hiring AI agent builders want people who can design a governed agent around a real process: a written brief, trusted sources, explicit bounds and a test set the agent must pass on the company's own cases. Many come from operations, claims, lending or support. Prove it with a certified capstone agent you can defend.

What does agent building look like in the US?

The US market is large and fragmented. Banks and credit unions, insurers, health systems and health tech, fintechs, retailers, logistics firms and business process outsourcers all build agents, and each sector brings its own rules. A builder at a regional bank documents agents for model risk review; one at a health tech firm designs around protected health information; one at a lender designs around adverse action notices.

Titles vary a lot: AI automation specialist, conversational AI designer, AI operations analyst, solutions engineer, process automation lead. Read for duties: designing agent workflows, writing test cases, working with reviewers and risk teams. What an AI agent builder does describes the work.

What do US builders build, and at what depth?

You qualify agents through brief, sources, bounds and certification; you never update model weights for a customer. Each agent is certified to a depth.

  • Loan application intake, depth 2. The agent gathers documents and drafts the file for an underwriter. It must never state or imply a credit decision. If a person declines the application, the reasons must be specific, so the agent's file must make the actual factors clear.
  • Prior authorisation paperwork at a health provider, depth 2. The agent assembles the request from the record and drafts it; a coordinator submits it. The agent reads only the minimum health information needed.
  • Insurance first notice of loss, depth 2. The agent captures the claim and drafts the file; an adjuster decides.
  • Retail order exceptions, depth 3 to 4 within limits. Refunds under the retailer's own limit go through at depth 4; exceptions are held.

Attest scores seven gates on real cases: grounded, refuses, depth, escalates, scope, adversarial and stable. Agent certificates lapse after 90 days, so recertification is a recurring task.

Which jobs could you apply for?

Role (titles vary) What it involves Common route in
Agent builder Design, test and certify agents Senior operations or analyst roles
Conversational AI designer Write how agents speak and when they hand over Content, customer experience
Model operations analyst Document agents for model risk review Model risk, validation
Agent owner Accountable for bounds and results Operations manager

What an agent builder is explains how the role differs from a software developer.

What skills and certificate do US employers look for?

US hiring managers often screen résumés quickly and then run behavioural and case interviews. Lead with outcomes you can explain: a process you redesigned, errors you reduced, an agent you certified. In the interview, walk through your capstone and defend each design choice.

Sector knowledge sets you apart. A builder who understands adverse action rules, HIPAA's minimum necessary standard or a bank's model risk process can start contributing quickly.

Certified Pryme Builder is a professional certificate, not a government licence. It requires about 24 hours of study plus a capstone agent certified in Attest to depth 2 or higher, and is valid for 12 months. Operator comes first. It is issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checkable at source by number or QR code; a public register lists holders and expiry dates. The AI agent builder CV template shows how to adapt it as a résumé.

Which US rules shape a builder's work?

There is no single federal AI law. Interagency model risk guidance SR 11-7 shapes how banks supervised by the OCC, Federal Reserve and FDIC develop, validate and govern models, and many treat decision-support agents the same way. ECOA and Regulation B require specific reasons when credit is denied, including when a model is used, so lending agents must keep the factors clear. HIPAA governs protected health information. GLBA covers financial privacy. State privacy laws, such as California's CCPA as amended by the CPRA, add rights for residents, and Colorado has passed an AI act aimed at high-risk systems making consequential decisions.

The CFPB supervises consumer finance, and state regulators such as NYDFS add their own expectations. The voluntary NIST AI Risk Management Framework, with its Govern, Map, Measure and Manage functions, and its Generative AI Profile are common references for documenting agents.

What should your 90 days look like?

Days 1 to 30. Earn the free Foundations badge and start Operator. Write a brief for one process, listing the rules in your sector the agent must respect.

Days 31 to 60. Complete Operator, with the practicum on a simulated queue if your employer does not use Pryme. Build 40 de-identified test cases.

Days 61 to 90. Complete Builder and certify your capstone in a free Build workspace. Write a design note mapped to the NIST functions. Reviewers can follow how to go from AI agent reviewer to AI agent builder; the general route is in how to become an AI agent builder, and the AI agent jobs and careers guide shows the field.

Questions people ask

Do I need a degree?

Some employers ask for one, especially banks. Many governed-platform builder roles value process expertise and evidence more. Check each advert.

Is remote work common?

It varies. Some builder roles are remote; regulated employers may limit where you work from because of data access.

Which sector should I target?

The one where you already know the rules and exceptions. That knowledge is what makes your test sets good.
