No. A licence is permission, usually granted under law by a regulator or public body, to do work you would otherwise be forbidden to do. An AI operator certificate is a professional certificate: evidence that you were assessed on a skill and met a standard. Nobody needs one by law, but an employer can check it at source.
What is the difference in plain words?
A licence answers the question "are you allowed?". A certificate answers "can you do it, and can we confirm that?". The first is about legal permission; the second is about competence.
| A licence to practise | The operator certificate | |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues it | A regulator or body acting under law | A vendor: Pryme, issued through VerifyDoc.ai |
| Is it required to work | Yes, for the regulated activity | No; employers decide whether to ask for it |
| What it proves | You meet the legal conditions to practise | You passed an exam and a two-week practicum of review decisions |
| What happens if you work without it | You may break the law | Nothing legal; you simply cannot show the credential |
| How long it lasts | Set by the regulator | 12 months, renewed by an update module and a short quiz |
What a licence to practise is covers the first column in more depth.
Why does the confusion arise?
Partly because "licence" is used loosely. Software is sold by the licence, and a business might talk about buying "licences" for its staff. That is a seat licence: permission to use the product, which says nothing about whether the person using it is any good. An employer that uses Pryme Intelligence gets seats with paid plans. A seat lets you log in; the certificate shows you can run the work.
The other source of confusion is that some businesses treat the certificate a bit like a licence internally. A business can choose to make approval rights depend on a current certificate, so only certified people may approve an agent's held decisions. That is a practice an organisation can adopt, not a legal rule, and it applies only inside that organisation.
What does the certificate not let you do?
It does not let you do regulated work you are not otherwise permitted to do. Take someone we will call Ingrid, who holds the operator certificate and reviews an insurer's claims agent. The certificate shows she can review the agent's decisions well. It does not make her a regulated adviser, and it does not let her give advice that requires authorisation. If her role needs a regulated status, that comes from the regulator, not from the certificate.
The same holds in every market. Whether the certificate is useful for jobs in Denmark, for example, depends on what employers value, not on any Danish licensing rule. Some laws, such as the EU AI Act, expect people who oversee AI systems to have suitable competence and AI literacy. A certificate can be evidence of that competence; it is not a legal authorisation.
Why does it expire if it is not a licence?
Because the skill changes. Agents, products and the rules around them move, and a credential that never expires stops saying anything about whether its holder is current. When it lapses, the check at source shows it as lapsed. Renewing your operator certificate is a light task, and it keeps the check honest.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy describes the operator certificate as a professional certificate, and that is how you should describe it on a CV. Write "Certified Pryme Operator, professional certificate, checkable at source", never "licensed". The full path is set out in how to get an AI operator certificate.
Questions people ask
Can a job advert require the certificate?
An employer can ask for any credential it chooses. That makes it a hiring preference, not a legal requirement. Read the duties in the advert as well as the credential list.
Is a certificate worth less than a licence?
They do different jobs. A licence says you are allowed; a certificate says you were assessed and passed. For agent review work, the second is usually what an employer wants to see.
Where can I learn more about what it proves?
The guide to AI operator certification explains what the certificate proves, who it is for and how to earn it.
