It shows as lapsed. Anyone who checks your certificate by number or QR code sees its status on the same page, and the public register shows the expiry date that has passed. Nothing else is taken from you: renewing, which means an update module and a short quiz, restores it. The real cost is what an employer concludes in the meantime.
Why does the certificate lapse at all?
The operator certificate is valid for 12 months. Agents, the product and the rules around them change, and a credential that never expired would say nothing about whether its holder had kept up. The expiry turns the certificate from a record of something you once did into a statement that your skill is current.
That is also why the check at source matters. A paper certificate cannot tell anyone it has expired. One checked at the issuer's page can, so the certificate status an employer sees is always the true one.
What changes on the day it lapses?
| While current | After it lapses | |
|---|---|---|
| Check by number or QR code | Shows as current | Shows as lapsed, on the same page |
| Public register | Name, credential, future expiry | Name, credential, past expiry |
| Your CV and LinkedIn | Accurate as written | Now overstate your status unless you update them |
| Employer approval rights | Unaffected | May be suspended, where a business ties them to a current certificate |
The last row depends on the employer. Some businesses make approval rights depend on a current certificate, so a lapse can mean you stop approving held decisions until you renew. That is a practice a business can choose to adopt, not a rule everywhere.
How does a lapse play out in practice?
Take a reviewer we will call Lucia at a mid-sized lender, where only certified staff may approve refunds above a set amount. Her certificate expires during a busy month and she misses the renewal reminder. The next morning, her approvals are routed to her team lead instead, because the lender has tied that approval right to a current certificate.
Nothing she has done is undone, and no record says she did anything wrong. She completes the update module and short quiz that week, the certificate shows as current again, and her approval rights return. The cost was a few days of extra work for her team lead and an awkward conversation, both avoidable.
How do you avoid a lapse?
Treat the expiry like any other deadline. Note it when the certificate is issued, and start the update module a few weeks before. Keep your certificate number handy, since that is what you and employers use to check status.
If you are between jobs and not using the skill, decide deliberately whether to renew. A lapsed certificate on a CV that claims it is current looks worse than a CV that says "Certified Pryme Operator, lapsed, renewing".
Is a lapse the same as revocation or a failed exam?
No. Revocation means the certificate was withdrawn, and it also shows as such when checked. A failed exam means no certificate was issued; what happens if you fail the operator exam covers that. A lapse simply means time ran out.
There is a parallel with agents themselves. In Pryme, an agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, and renewing an AI agent's certificate before it lapses is part of an operator's routine. The principle is the same for people and for agents: authority has to be current to count.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy handles renewal as an update module and a short quiz, so restoring a lapsed certificate is light work. If it has been a long time since it lapsed, check the renewal terms in your account before you start. The guide to AI operator certification explains the full cycle, and how to get an AI operator certificate covers the first issue.
Questions people ask
Does a lapse mean I have to redo the practicum?
Renewal is an update module and a short quiz, and it restores the certificate. Confirm the terms for your situation when you renew.
Should I remove a lapsed certificate from my CV?
Either renew it or label it accurately. Leaving it listed as current is the one choice that can hurt you, because employers can check.
Does the Foundations badge lapse?
No. The Foundations badge does not expire. Only the professional certificates, Operator, Builder and Architect, carry an expiry.
