What is a review queue analyst?

A review queue analyst manages the flow of AI agent work waiting for a person: volumes, waiting times, rotas and routing. What the role involves and how it differs.

A review queue analyst is the person who manages the flow of work that AI agents hold for people to decide. They watch how many items arrive, how long they wait, who is available to decide them and whether each type reaches someone with the right authority. Their job is the queue as a system, not each decision in it.

Why does a queue need its own analyst?

Held items are where agents hand over to people. If the queue backs up, customers wait, deadlines are missed and reviewers start to rush. If items reach the wrong people, decisions are made by someone without the authority or knowledge to make them.

Once a business runs more than one or two agents, managing that flow becomes a job. One agent's certificate lapses and its work returns to people overnight. A policy change doubles the number of held payments. Someone has to see it coming and move people to meet it.

What does the work involve?

A review queue analyst typically:

  • Tracks volumes by item type, agent and time of day.
  • Watches how long items wait, and which ones are close to a deadline.
  • Builds and adjusts the rota so named reviewers with the right approval limits cover every shift.
  • Sets routing rules so each type of item reaches someone authorised to decide it.
  • Plans for surges, such as an agent dropping to depth 1 after a run that clears no depth.
  • Reports patterns, like a type of item held far more often than expected.

The staffing side is covered in how you staff an AI agent review queue, and the rota itself in the review queue rota template.

An example

Take an analyst we will call Leon at a payments business. Monday mornings bring a spike of held refunds from weekend orders. Leon moves two reviewers with higher refund limits onto the early shift and sets routing so refunds above the team's lowest limit skip junior reviewers. Waiting times fall. Later he notices one held type, address changes with a mismatched postcode, has tripled. He raises it, and the cause turns out to be an external address feed. Fixing the source shrinks the queue more than any rota change could.

How is it different from a reviewer or an AI operations analyst?

A reviewer decides individual items. The queue analyst decides who sees which items and when. An AI operations analyst looks more broadly at agent performance: overturn rates, certificate status, drift. In smaller teams one person does both analyst jobs; in larger ones they split. The broader role is described in what an AI operations analyst does.

The underlying idea of a review queue is also worth knowing on its own.

Where the Academy fits

The Operator track of Pryme Intelligence Academy includes modules on reading the workspace and running the rhythm, which cover how held items flow and how teams keep pace. Starting as a reviewer and earning Certified Pryme Operator is a natural route into queue analysis.

Questions people ask

Do review queue analysts decide items themselves?

Sometimes, especially during surges or in small teams. Their main job is the flow, but deciding items now and then keeps them close to what reviewers face.

What background suits this role?

Workforce planning, contact centre real-time management and team leading all fit. The habit of watching numbers through the day and acting early carries over directly.
