How collections agents can prepare for the AI operator exam

How collections agents can prepare for the AI operator exam: a six-week plan, module tests set in lending, where marks are lost and how to pace the day.

Six weeks, with most of the effort on modules your job never asks about. Finish Foundations, then the eight Operator modules, taking each module test in a consumer lending setting. Hardship, fairness and escalation questions will suit you; provenance, teaching the agent, reading the workspace and usage need practice. On the day, forty questions in sixty minutes, and thirty-two correct passes.

What does the exam test, and where does collections experience help?

The written exam is the first half of Certified Pryme Operator; a two-week practicum follows. It has 40 questions, 60 minutes and a pass mark of four in five. Questions place you in a workspace and ask what should happen next. What is on the AI operator exam explains the style.

Collections work trains you for the hardest review questions: noticing a disclosure of hardship in the middle of a routine message, refusing to discuss a debt with a third party, recognising that a disputed debt must pause. Questions on human review and red lines will often feel easy.

Other areas will not. Distinguishing sealed ledger data from what a customer has declared, deciding whether to fix a draft or the agent's source, spotting a pattern across a queue, and understanding what the business pays for are new for most collections staff. The guide to AI operator certification explains how the exam and practicum fit together.

What collections workflow do the questions assume?

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Account review Reads ledger and notes 1 Judging what the notes mean
Scheduled reminders Sends within rules 3 Setting rules and contact limits
Payment arrangement Proposes within policy 2 Affordability decision
Hardship disclosure Flags and pauses 1 Specialist team
Contact with a third party Refused at the lender's own limit none Handled under the lender's rules
Settlement offer Drafts and holds 2, held Authorised decision

What does a six-week plan look like?

  1. You, week 1: Foundations, about four hours across six modules. Learn the five depths and the four verdicts until you can explain them without notes.
  2. You, week 2: how a governed agent decides, and human review. Take both module tests.
  3. You, week 3: teaching the agent, and keeping knowledge current. Do the labs in a free Build workspace to see how one source change fixes many letters at once.
  4. You, week 4: reading the workspace, and when something goes wrong. Practise reading a queue rather than an account.
  5. You, week 5: usage and billing, and running the rhythm.
  6. You, week 6: retake every module test, review your notes on wrong answers, and book the exam.

The operator exam study plan template gives a weekly table you can copy. Lessons can be read or heard as audio with notes, so commutes can carry much of the reading.

What does a provenance question feel like?

Here is an invented example, not a real question. The agent has proposed a payment arrangement based on income and spending the customer declared in a web form. The lender's own records, which are sealed, show the customer has two other loans with the lender in arrears that the form does not mention. What should you do?

Approving the arrangement because it fits policy on the declared figures misses the point. The stronger source contradicts the weaker one. The right answer holds the arrangement and has someone discuss the full picture with the customer, with the hardship team involved if the total is unaffordable. The question tests provenance as much as fairness.

How should you use module tests?

Module tests are set in your own industry and role, so you will meet arrears, arrangements, hardship and disputes. Treat each as a practice paper. Write one line per wrong answer: the situation, your answer, the right answer, why. Collections staff often find their errors are not about customers at all but about the system: choosing the right bound, or the right fix. That tells you where to study.

Retake a module test only after you have reread the lesson behind your wrong answers. Retaking straight away mostly tests your memory of the questions, which tells you little about whether you have understood the reasoning.

How should you pace exam day?

  • About ninety seconds per question. Check you have reached question twenty around minute thirty.
  • Read the final sentence first.
  • Sort the sources. Sealed ledger, declared customer statements, external documents.
  • Find the deciding bound. The lowest of role scope, certificate, sources, the lender's own limits and platform guardrails decides.
  • Mark and move on from any question that takes over three minutes.

Where do collections agents lose marks?

  • Choosing the fairest-sounding option without checking the evidence. Fairness depends on the facts in the scenario.
  • Treating a lender's own limit as "withheld". A business narrowing what an agent may do produces a refusal or a hold; withheld is the platform floor for every agent.
  • Editing drafts one by one when the question is about the agent's sources.
  • Skimming usage and billing. It has its own questions.

Questions people ask

Do I need to know lending regulation in detail?

No. You need to recognise when a decision touches a rule, such as hardship or disputes, and route it. The exam does not test the detail of specific laws.

Is there a cost to prepare?

Lessons, labs and module tests at Pryme Intelligence Academy are free. A professional certificate carries an issue fee, paid when it is issued, never to sit or pass.

What comes after the exam?

The two-week practicum, assessed at nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor.
