Administrative assistants check other people's work before it leaves the building: the letter with the wrong client name, the double-booked meeting, the attachment meant for someone else. That habit is the core of AI agent review. To move, learn how governed agents decide, practise judging their drafts, earn a checkable certificate and apply with examples.
Why is admin work good preparation?
In a professional services firm, an agent can draft client emails, prepare engagement letters from a template, schedule meetings, log time entries and process expense claims. Each of those is work you already do or check. What changes is that the agent prepares the first version and you decide whether it goes out.
Three admin strengths matter most:
- Confidentiality. You know which client information must never reach the wrong inbox. A reviewer's most important catch is often a draft addressed to the wrong person, or one that quotes another client's matter.
- Tone. You know how a senior partner writes and how a nervous client reads. Agents get facts right more easily than they get tone right.
- Gatekeeping. You decide what reaches a busy executive and what does not. Review is the same filter, applied to an agent.

What will you be reviewing?
An illustrative queue for an agent working alongside a small consultancy's admin team:
| Step | The agent does | Depth | Stays with a person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client asks to move a meeting | Reads the diaries and proposes slots | 1 | Nothing yet |
| Reply to the client | Drafts the email with the new time | 2 | You check recipients, tone and the slot |
| Routine internal room booking | Books it within the firm's limits | 3 | You glance at the day's bookings |
| Engagement letter for a new client | Drafts from the template | 2 | You check names, fees and scope wording; a partner signs |
| Expense claim above the policy limit | Holds for a named approver | 4 | The approver decides; you check the receipts |
Notice what the agent does not decide alone. Anything that commits the firm, such as a fee in an engagement letter, is held for a person, and spending money above a limit is refused: the agent may only draft it. Routine internal tasks run at depth 3, and you sample them rather than check each one. Learning to tell the two apart, and to spot when a routine-looking task is not routine, is most of the skill. A meeting invitation to a client who has just complained, for example, may need a person's touch.
How do you make the move, step by step?
- You, weeks 1 to 2: learn the decision chain. Depth, the four verdicts (allowed, held, refused, withheld), and the idea that the lowest of five bounds decides each action.
- You, weeks 2 to 3: audit a week of your own work. List every task and mark what an agent could draft, what it could do alone, and what you would always check. This becomes your interview material.
- You, weeks 3 to 5: offer to review a pilot. Many firms try agents on scheduling or correspondence first. How to volunteer for an AI agent pilot as an administrative assistant explains how to ask without overstepping.
- You, weeks 4 to 8: complete a practicum. Two weeks of review decisions, measured against a standard, on a live or simulated queue.
- You, weeks 6 to 9: earn a certificate employers can check. Choose one with a practicum, a public register and visible expiry.
- You, week 8: rewrite your CV. Replace "managed diaries for three partners" with "reviewed outgoing client correspondence for three partners; caught misaddressed and off-tone drafts before sending."
- You, weeks 8 to 14: apply. Look at operations, quality and practice support roles. Start your letter from the cover letter template for administrative assistants.
How do you turn your admin record into evidence?
Admin work is often invisible because it prevents problems. Make it visible. Keep an anonymised list of catches: the misaddressed email, the double booking, the expense claim without a receipt. Add the practicum decision log and the certificate number. In interviews, tell one story where you stopped something going out and explain how you would write that up as a reason for an agent's owner.
If your current firm already uses an agent, ask whether your corrections are recorded. Many firms file every verdict, which means your catches may already be on record under your name.
What should you track?
Track your practicum accuracy, the number of catches you can describe in one sentence each, and replies to applications. Aim for a list of at least ten catches before your first interview. If you get replies from operations roles but not quality roles, your CV may be leaning on organisation rather than judgment; rebalance it.
What trips people up?
- Selling organisation instead of judgment. Employers hiring reviewers want to know what you stopped, not how many diaries you kept.
- Underrating confidentiality. It is a real skill. Name it.
- Applying only to "AI" roles. Practice support, client operations and quality roles often include review.
- Comparing yourself to analysts. You do not need to analyse data to review an agent well.

Questions people ask
Will agents make administrative assistants redundant?
Agents take on more drafting and scheduling. Firms still need people who judge what goes out under their name, and that judgment is the reviewer's job.
Do I need to be good with technology?
You need to be comfortable with the systems you already use. Review is about judging outcomes, not configuring software.
Is review work more senior than admin work?
It often carries more responsibility, because your decisions shape what the agent does next. Grading and titles depend on the employer.
