Partly. AI agents will take over much of the scheduling, document drafting, inbox sorting and data entry that fills an administrative assistant's day. What stays with a person is the judgement: which request matters, what is confidential, how to handle a difficult client, and when something does not look right. Assistants who learn to supervise agents and own that judgement become more useful, not less.
What do agents take from administrative work?
An administrative assistant in a professional services firm might spend the day booking meetings, preparing documents from templates, filing, updating the CRM, sorting the shared inbox, arranging travel and processing expenses. Most of that is routine and rule-bound, and agents can do much of it.
| Task | Who does it once agents arrive |
|---|---|
| Scheduling routine meetings | Agent, within rules about who can book what |
| First drafts of letters and documents | Agent, from templates; a person sends |
| Sorting the inbox | Agent, routing and summarising |
| Updating records | Agent, from documents and emails |
| Travel and expenses | Agent, preparing; a person approves exceptions |
| Diary conflicts between senior people | Person, who knows the priorities |
| Confidential or sensitive matters | Person, who knows what must not be shared |
| Client visitors and difficult calls | Person |
| Spotting what is odd | Person: an unusual request, a payment ask, a tone that is wrong |
Why does judgement become the job?
An agent can book a meeting perfectly. It does not know that the partner has avoided this client for a month for a reason, or that a request to send a document to a new address came after a suspicious phone call. Experienced assistants know the people, the politics and the patterns. In a firm with agents, that knowledge becomes the valuable part of the role.
Discretion matters too. An agent drafting from shared files may include information that should not go to that recipient. An assistant who reviews drafts before they go out is the safeguard.
Which skills make you harder to replace?
- Supervising agents: reading why a draft was held, correcting it, and fixing the template or rule so it does not recur.
- Knowledge upkeep: keeping the templates, contact lists and procedures the agent relies on current.
- Confidentiality judgement: knowing what may go where.
- Fraud awareness: requests to change bank details or send documents urgently are common attacks on assistants.
- Coordination: handling the people side that agents cannot.
These skills open routes into operations coordinator, office manager, knowledge manager and agent reviewer roles. How an administrative assistant can move into AI operations sets out the options, and moving from administrative assistant to AI agent reviewer covers one route step by step.
What does the change look like in one firm?
Take an invented example. A twenty-person consultancy introduces an agent that drafts client letters, books meetings and updates records. An assistant we will call Shona, who supported three partners, volunteered for the pilot. She found the agent used an old letterhead and occasionally booked meetings over partners' protected time. She fixed the templates and set booking rules. Within months she was supporting six partners with less effort, and she owned the agent's templates and the review of its client-facing drafts.
Her job did not vanish. It grew in scope, with the routine done by the agent and the judgement done by her. If your firm is starting a pilot, volunteering for an AI agent pilot as an administrative assistant explains how to get involved.
What should you do now?

If you work as a freelance or remote assistant, compare whether a virtual assistant job is safe from AI agents, where the pressures differ. The wider set of roles is in AI agent jobs and careers.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's free Foundations badge, about 4 hours, gives you the vocabulary of governed agents. If you will review an agent's work daily, Certified Pryme Operator adds human review and keeping knowledge current, and its lessons can be read or heard as audio around a full working day.
Questions people ask
Will there be fewer administrative assistant jobs?
Some firms will need fewer people doing routine administration. Firms still need people who coordinate, use discretion and supervise agents, and those roles often carry more responsibility.
Do I need technical skills?
No. You need to understand how the agent decides and where its limits are. Template and process skills you already have are what matter.
What is the biggest risk for assistants using agents?
Sending something the agent drafted without reading it. Confidential information or a wrong recipient can cause real harm, so review before sending.
